Ghana Freedom Party ready to announce Akua Donkor’s replacement

The Ghana Freedom Party has announced the selection of a new presidential candidate following the demise of its former candidate and founder, Madam Akua Donkor.

According to multiple media reports the new candidate is set to be unveiled in a few days by the party’s leadership ahead of the December elections.

Addressing the media during a conference in the Ashanti Region on Friday, November 1, Patrick Tetteh, the party’s parliamentary candidate for the Nsawam-Adoagyiri constituency, affirmed their commitment to participating in the general elections and expressed their intention to uphold the legacy of the late Akua Donkor.

“The executives and leadership of the Ghana Freedom Party have decided and agreed on the next presidential candidate and running mate, which will be announced and presented to the EC and the general public within the given period set by the Electoral Commission to enable the Commission to proceed with its legal mandate and the democratic process of our country,” he is quoted as saying.

The party’s decision to select a replacement for Akua Donkor aligns with the Electoral Commission’s directive for the party to nominate a new presidential candidate.

This directive is in line with Article 50 (4) of the 1992 Constitution, which states that if a candidate dies after the close of nominations but before the election, “a further period of ten days shall be allowed for nominations.”

Meanwhile, the printing of presidential ballot papers has been halted by the electoral body.

The founder of the Ghana Freedom Party passed away at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital on Monday, October 28, 2024, due to respiratory-related issues, according to her 2020 running mate, Ernest ‘Adakabre’ Frimpong Manso.
