OLA Girls Commemorates 71st Speech Day with a Call to Support Female Entrepreneurs.

The OLA Girls SHS, Ho marked its 71st Speech and Prize Giving day on the 15th of March 2025, in the Volta Regional capital Ho, under the theme “Championing the Cause of Female Entrepreneurs as Catalysts for Change and Socio-Economic Growth.”

Ms. Benedicta Amata Agbezudor, Headmistress of OLA SHS, in her speech emphasized on the school’s accomplishments in both academics and extracurricular endeavours including football, volleyball, basketball, athletics, music, culture, among others. She attributed these successes to the discipline shown by students and faculty members in general.

“The high level of discipline among students and staff has been key to our academic excellence and co-curricular achievements,” she added. She expressed appreciation to Past OLA Girls Associations (POGA), the PTA, and government for the constant support to the school.

Nevertheless, she listed the institution’s pressing infrastructural problems, such as an abandoned headmistress’ bungalow, deteriorating school buses, packed classrooms and dormitories, and under equipped science laboratories.
“Our classrooms and dormitories are overcrowded, and our science labs require urgent renovations. We ask the government and philanthropic organizations to join us in making teaching and learning more effective,” she said.

The Regional Minister who served as the Special Guest of Honour., Hon. James Gunu pointed out the importance of female entrepreneurs in national development. He stressed that women-owned businesses are critical to Ghana’s economic transformation, as they make significant contributions to workforce creation and innovation. “In Ghana, women constitute approximately 44% of all entrepreneurs, one of the highest rates in the world. This demonstrates that women are more than just economical participants; they are leaders and change-makers,” Mr. Gunu explained.

Despite these advancements, Mr. Gunu recognized the difficulties that female entrepreneurs face when it comes to accessing funding, mentorship and trainings relating to their businesses. He advocated for increased financial support and investment opportunities for women-led businesses, urging all financial institutions, the private sectors and government agencies to work together in establishing dedicated funds for female entrepreneurs.

The minister stated “if we truly want to champion female entrepreneurs as catalysts for socio-economic growth, then we must take deliberate steps to ensure they are given the needed support, tools and opportunities.”

Mrs. Lucy Afari, the Chief Executive Officer of Flexy Foods Limited who is also a member of POGA, urged young women to take advantage of the opportunities present in business, skill development, and capacity enhancement. She advised the students to engage in internships, seek mentorship, and build their professional networks.

“Numerous opportunities exist for women and young individuals; seize them and acquire one or two skills. Participate in internships, learn, volunteer, and prepare yourself to capitalise on promising opportunities as they arise,” she stated.

She emphasized the significance of endorsing businesses led by women, asserting that, “There is nothing better than having your own people hyping and supporting you on.” She encouraged the promotion, referral, and patronage of women-owned enterprises.

Students who demonstrated merit, along with teaching and non-teaching staff members, were acknowledged for their accomplishments and dedication. Those who excelled in academics and extracurricular pursuits received awards, as did teachers and non-teachers who were recognized for their exceptional service.

The purpose of the awards was to motivate students to pursue excellence while also encouraging staff to stay dedicated to the success and advancement of the school.

The event celebrated remarkable achievements while highlighting the significance of empowering young women as leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs who can contribute to the socioeconomic development of the nation.

It was sponsored by the 1999 & 2000 year groups in commemoration of their 25th Silver Jubilee. The school’s board of directors expressed appreciation to the alumni for their support.
