In Ghana, Easter simply wouldn’t feel right without the joyful shout of “Kwahu ooooo Kwahu!” For many years, Kwahu has been the heart of Easter celebrations across the nation. Growing up in Accra, my parents, both proud Kwahu natives, never missed an opportunity to share stories of the Easter revelry in their hometown, especially as relatives from near and far flocked to join the festivities. My siblings and I often daydreamed about our inaugural Easter in Kwahu, a dream that felt distant until I finally came of age to experience it myself.
In 2003, my first Kwahu Easter finally arrived,
A solo venture, quite a sight,
Surrounded by strangers, it felt a bit tight.
Family from afar, all gathered to cheer,
Yet here I was, feeling somewhat unclear.
Then came 2005, a thrilling delight,
When paragliding soared into the Easter night,
Launched by greats, with memories so bright:
Alhaji Aliu Mahama (Former Vice President),
Major Rtd. Courage Quarshigah (Minister of Tourism), and
Ferdinand Ayim, Special Assistant to the Minister of Tourism, of blessed memory.
Did I have fun? Oh, indeed, it’s true!
It was the best one yet, a joyous debut!
With laughter and thrills, and skies so wide,
Kwahu Easter, where happiness can’t hide.
What began as a homecoming for those from Kwahu has blossomed into a vibrant annual funfair, a carnival where people from all over the globe come together to celebrate Easter in Kwahu.
From my time enjoying the Kwahu Easter festivities, I’ve discovered something many might not realize beyond the fun and relaxation, this place is steeped in rich cultural heritage just waiting to be explored.
Among the highlights you can visit are the Nkofieho Caves of Life (a mystical wonder) in Twenedurase; the towering Bruku Rock in Kwahu Tafo; the serene River Afram; the historic Kwahu Aduamoah Fort; the stunning Butuase Waterfall on the outskirts of Kwahu Tafo; the thrilling Kwahu Odweanoma Paragliding in Atibie; the breathtaking Oworobong Waterfall in the heart of Framasi; and the enchanting Oku Abena Waterfall in Bokuruwa.
If you’re a fan of nature and history, don’t limit your view of Kwahu to just an Easter getaway filled with funfair activities! Instead, embark on an adventure to uncover the rich tapestry of historic sites stretching from Atibie to Kwahu Tafo, Abetifi, and all the other fascinating towns in the Kwahu region.
