NPP Primaries: Kennedy Agyapong Leads Bawumia in Latest Survey

News Politics

With few days left for the New Patriotic Party, NPP, to settle on its 2024 flagbearer, a latest survey suggests that Assin Central MP Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong could be in to shake the party.

The survey which was conducted by the National Elections Strategist tipped the firebrand Ken Agyapong to take the lead and beat the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming NPP presidential primaries slated for Saturday, October 4.

The survey, it said, was conducted from September 23 to October 25 on 8, 329 delegates across all regions in the country and the results shows Ken Agyapong in a substantial advantage over the other candidates. In the survey, it is clear that 50.59% of delegates support Ken Agyapong as against 46.8% for Dr Bawumia whiles the other candidates draw 1.6% support. Interestingly, about 1% of the said delegates have still not decided who they would vote for in the coming elections.

“The survey shows a close contest between Hon. Agyapong and Dr. Bawumia. According to the findings from the survey, there are signs that the turnout could be considerably higher than it was in 2014, the year that voter participation peaked since the NPP’s founding. The report also predicts higher voting rates among youth, who overwhelmingly support Hon. Agyapong. However, it also shows indications of higher-than-expected turnout overall”, part of the survey report read.

Regional Breakdown

As is expected, the survey established that, Dr Bawumia is dominating in the northern regions. However, Ken Agyapong is making gradual strides as he is gaining grounds with his message of transforming the those regions into industrial zones. The two foremost candidates are expected to, according to the survey, win eight (8) regions each. Ken draws his support from the Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, Central, Oti, Volta, Western and Western North regions, whiles the Vice President takes the rest eight.

The concluding part of the report said, “As it has already indicated, it will be a close contest between Dr. Bawumia and Hon. Agyapong. However, Hon. Agyapong will emerge victorious in the November 4, 2023 primaries. Owusu Afriyie Akoto and Francis Addai Nimo will both share the third and fourth place. However, their votes will not be significant enough to make a difference in their quest to lead the party”.

It finishes off with the results of another survey it said it conducted within the same period on the choice of president in the general elections where 12, 404 general voters were questioned. The results posited that Ken Ohene Agyapong leads again with 31.1% as compared to former president John Dramani Mahama’s 30.8% and Dr. Bawumia’s 22.3%.
