The Ghana Police Service has invited the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asutifi North over the attack on a National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) team led by its Director of Operations, Colonel Dominic Buah, at Ahafo Hwidiem in the Ahafo Region.
According to the police, its initial investigation indicated that the MP, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, who is alleged to have incited the mob and obstructed the NAIMOS team, has been invited to assist with the investigation.
In a statement issued on Monday, November 3, 2025, the police indicated that Kwaku Addo is accused of leading thugs to free illegal miners apprehended by NAIMOS in his constituency.
“Preliminary investigation has established that on Saturday, 1st November 2025, the NAIMOS Director and his team intercepted illegal miners operating near Bronikrom in the Ahafo Region and arrested some suspects. Exhibits retrieved from them include a side handbag containing one (1) Smith & Wesson pistol, two (2) pistol magazines, twenty-one (21) rounds of 9mm ammunition, an unregistered Range Rover vehicle, an unregistered Toyota RAV4 vehicle, and several mobile phones.
“While the team was preparing to hand over the suspects to the Hwidiem Police Station, the MP reportedly arrived with a group of men and demanded their release. When his demand was refused, the group forcibly removed the suspects’ handcuffs and chased the NAIMOS team from the scene,” parts of the statement read.

The statement also indicated that the Asutifi North MP is accused of instigating a mob that attacked the NAIMOS team at the police station.
“A mob numbering about 600, allegedly incited by the MP, later besieged the Hwidiem Police Station, demanding the release of the miners and seized vehicles.
“The crowd vandalised the Director’s vehicle, damaged parts of the police station, and threatened to set it ablaze. Reinforcement teams from the Ahafo Regional Command were deployed to restore order and prevent further destruction,” the police said.
About the attack:
According to a report by Erastus Asare Donkor, ten military officers who are members of NAIMOS, led by their Director of Operations, conducted an operation in the Ahafo Region on Saturday, November 1, 2025.
He indicated that while on their operation, the NAIMOS Director received information that an excavator was actively being used for mining along the roadside near Branikrom, prompting the team to move to the area and arrest the illegal miners, including a Burkinabe national.
Erastus Asare Donkor further stated that the NAIMOS team demanded the presence of the site owner at the location where the mining was being carried out.
He added that an individual later arrived, identifying himself as a Defence Intelligence (DI) representative from the Ahafo Region, followed by another person who reportedly claimed to be the site owner.
A search conducted by the NAIMOS team at the site led to the discovery of ammunition of various kinds, as well as cash and mobile phones.
