President Mahama to lead AU Reparation Justice Agenda

Ghana has been designated to spearhead the African Union’s (AU) reparatory justice agenda as Champion, following a resolution reached by AU to expand the theme of Reparations for an entire decade from 2026 to 2036.

The resolution was adopted at the 7th AU Mid-Year Coordination Meeting held at Malabo in Equatorial Guinea, where the 55-member bloc agreed to intensify efforts toward justice, accountability, and redress for the historical and systemic injustices suffered by African people.

This update was shared on X by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa on Monday, July 14, 2025.

“The African Union has passed a consequential resolution extending the theme of the year on Reparations by a decade for the period 2026 to 2036 with Ghana expected to lead as Champion”, he wrote.

Okudzeto Ablakwa further congratulated President John Dramani Mahama, who will play a key role in championing the initiative.

“Congratulations to President John Mahama for the confidence reposed in him by the 55-country continental union”, he indicated.

Ablakwa also announced the successful completion of his tenure as Chair of the Ministerial Committee on Agenda 2063, the African Union’s blueprint for sustainable development and integration.

He noted that South Africa’s Foreign Minister will take over the role as the committee prepares for the next phase of implementation.

“I also successfully completed my task as Chair of the Ministerial Committee on Agenda 2063. The South African Foreign Minister is expected to take over from me”, he added.

Among other key outcomes of the summit, the AU approved the 2026 budget and the Strategic Agenda Coordination and Assessment (SACA) report, paving the way for financial and strategic alignment across the continent’s priority areas.
