Security officer assaulted at Greater Accra Regional Hospital, suspect arrested

Management of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital has confirmed that one of its security officers was assaulted while on duty at the facility’s Labour Ward, describing the incident as “deeply regrettable.”

The attack occurred on February 18, 2026, at about 7:28 p.m., sparking renewed concerns about violence against healthcare and frontline staff in public hospitals.

According to hospital officials, the security officer approached an 18-year-old visitor, identified as Gabriel Dimson, who was accompanying his mother and a friend.

The officer reportedly directed him to move to the reception area, explaining that standing at the ward entrance outside approved visiting hours violated hospital regulations.

However, Mr. Dimson allegedly refused to comply, pushed the officer to the ground, and physically assaulted him. The officer reportedly fell unconscious and was immediately attended to by doctors on duty.

He remains admitted and is responding to treatment.

The matter was reported to the Ghana Police Service at the Adabraka District Police Command.

Hospital authorities confirmed that the suspect has been arrested and that investigations are underway ahead of prosecution.

Management emphasized that violence against hospital staff will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

“Our security officers play a critical role in enforcing hospital policies designed to protect patients, visitors, and healthcare workers,” the statement said.

The public has been urged to cooperate fully with hospital personnel and comply with visiting protocols and established guidelines to maintain a safe and orderly healthcare environment.

The incident is likely to intensify calls for stronger protective measures for healthcare workers and support staff across Ghana’s public health system
