Stop opposing everything just because you’re in opposition — Koomson tells Minority

The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, Abraham Koomson, has criticised the Minority in Parliament for what he describes as a pattern of opposing government policies simply because they are in opposition.

Abraham Komson said the responsibility of the Minority goes beyond rejecting policies introduced by the government.

According to him, opposition lawmakers must demonstrate leadership by offering constructive proposals rather than dismissing government initiatives outright.

Koomson cautioned that the Minority risks damaging its credibility if it continues to challenge government decisions without presenting viable alternatives.

He stressed that being in opposition should not translate into automatically rejecting every policy proposal put forward by the government.

Instead, he urged members of the Minority to engage meaningfully in parliamentary debates and contribute ideas that could help improve policies.

Koomson pointed to the recent controversy over the reduction in cocoa producer prices as an example of what he believes is politically driven criticism.

On February 12, 2026, the government announced a reduction in the cocoa producer price to GH¢41,392 per tonne — equivalent to GH¢2,587 per bag — for the remainder of the 2025/2026 crop season.

The decision was approved by the Producer Price Review Committee.

Following the announcement, the Minority indicated plans to summon the Minister of Finance, Cassiel Ato Forson, to Parliament to respond to concerns about worsening conditions in the cocoa sector.

The Minority has argued that the revised pricing structure could negatively affect cocoa farmers and worsen livelihoods within the industry.

However, Koomson dismissed those concerns, insisting the reaction from the opposition lacks merit.

According to him, the matter has been unnecessarily politicised, with some members of the opposition using it to revive what he described as their “dwindling political fortunes.”

He therefore urged Minority MPs to focus on constructive engagement and policy alternatives rather than opposing government decisions purely for political advantage.
