Volta MDCEs Rule Out 2028 Parliamentary Bids to Protect Party Unity

No Municipal or District Chief Executive (MDCE) in the Volta Region will contest in the 2028 parliamentary primaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Dean of MDCEs in the region, Hon. Jerry Yaw Ameko, has announced.

According to him, all 18 MDCEs in the region have collectively resolved not to challenge sitting Members of Parliament (MPs) for their seats, in a move aimed at preserving party unity and supporting the government’s development agenda.

“Our stance is to work hand-in-hand with our respective MPs to lift the region to greater heights, and not to contest their seats,” Hon. Ameko stated.

He emphasised that the government’s Resetting Agenda demands absolute cohesion within the party, assuring that no MDCE would take steps that could undermine the prevailing unity within the NDC in the region.

Hon. Ameko, who also serves as the District Chief Executive for Adaklu, made the remarks during the signing of the 2026 Performance Agreement Contracts between the MDCEs and the Volta Regional Coordinating Council in Ho last Sunday.

Reflecting on previous internal contests, the Dean noted that past instances where MDCEs challenged sitting MPs led to divisions within the party’s ranks.

“That will not happen again,” he affirmed.

The event saw all 18 MDCEs, accompanied by their respective MPs and Coordinating Directors, append their signatures to the annual performance contracts.

The exercise, instituted by the Head of the Local Government Service, is designed as a governance mechanism to strengthen accountability, enhance service delivery, and ensure that decentralisation translates into measurable development outcomes for citizens.

Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, underscored the importance of local governance as the frontline of national development.

He explained that the performance contracts outline carefully selected projects, programmes and service delivery targets tailored to address the immediate needs of communities across the region.

These targets span critical sectors including infrastructure development, sanitation, education, healthcare, local economic development, social protection, and other key performance indicators.

Hon. Gunu commended the MDCEs for their firm commitment to party unity and collaboration with MPs on development matters, describing the move as a significant step toward consolidating progress in the region.
