Bawumia appoints former rivals to key NPP policy committees in unity drive ahead of 2028

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has appointed all four of his former contenders in the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primaries to top roles in newly created NPP policy committees, in what political observers are describing as a major effort to strengthen party unity ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The move forms part of a broader restructuring initiative aimed at building a research-driven policy framework for the opposition New Patriotic Party.

At the centre of the initiative is the establishment of an overarching NPP Policy Committee, chaired by Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, former Information Minister and current legislator.

The committee’s secretariat will be headed by Dr Kwasi Nyame Baafi.

The structure will supervise multiple sector-focused committees covering areas such as employment, energy, education, health, local governance, transport, lands and natural resources, and the economy.

According to party insiders, the committees are expected to conduct research, engage stakeholders and produce policy alternatives supported by data and technical analysis.

A major highlight of the announcement is the inclusion of Dr Bawumia’s former competitors in the NPP flagbearer race.

Kennedy Agyapong has been named Co-Chairman of the Employment and Jobs Policy Committee, while Kwabena Agyapong will serve as Co-Chairman of the Housing and Urban Development Policy Committee.

Former Agriculture and Interior Minister Bryan Acheampong has been appointed Co-Chairman of the Defence and Interior Policy Committee.

Meanwhile, former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum will co-chair the Education Policy Committee.

Political analysts say the appointments signal an intentional effort by Dr Bawumia to consolidate support within the party and avoid factional divisions after the primaries.

Observers believe assigning substantive policy responsibilities to former rivals helps transform internal competition into collaboration while strengthening the party’s organisational structure.

The initiative is also being interpreted as an attempt to reposition the NPP as a policy-oriented opposition capable of presenting alternative governance proposals rather than focusing solely on criticism of the ruling government.

Sources within the party indicate that the committees are expected to begin work in the coming days, with consultations and policy reviews scheduled across key sectors.

The new framework is widely viewed as consistent with Dr Bawumia’s political image, which has largely centred on technology, economic policy and data-driven governance.

Within NPP circles, reactions to the announcement have largely been positive, with many supporters describing the development as a sign of growing unity and renewed strategic direction for the party ahead of the next election cycle.
