GNAT gives government two-week ultimatum over attacks on teachers

The General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers, Thomas Tanko Musah, has issued a two-week ultimatum to the government to address the increasing attacks on teachers across the country.

The warning follows an alleged assault on three teachers and a civilian at Adiewoso M/A Basic School on April 30, 2026.

According to the Wassa West District branch of GNAT, the victims were allegedly attacked by military personnel believed to be from the 2nd Infantry Battalion based at Apremdo in Takoradi.

Speaking to TV XYZ on May 7, 2026, Tanko Musah condemned the incident and described the situation as unacceptable.

We are saying it is unacceptable and within two weeks, if nothing happens, we’ll descend there and the state should be blamed for whatever happens,” he stated.

He expressed concern over what he described as the growing vulnerability of teachers, alleging that educators are increasingly facing abuse from students, parents, community members and now security personnel.

The GNAT General Secretary warned that the union could embark on drastic nationwide action if authorities fail to address the matter within the stipulated period.

In two weeks, if nothing is done, this country will come to a standstill. We shall do it. If the country has to come to a standstill for this matter to be addressed, then so be it,” he said.

Tanko Musah stressed that protecting teachers is the responsibility of the state and warned that GNAT would be compelled to act if government institutions fail to ensure their safety.

The incident has triggered renewed calls for a full investigation into the alleged assault and stronger protection measures for teachers and other public sector workers.

Earlier, GNAT’s Wassa West District branch had also demanded a thorough probe into the incident involving the alleged military attack on the teachers.
