Police warn social media creators against criminal, threatening content

The Ghana Police Service has issued a strong warning to social media content creators and online users against posting threatening, violent, or criminal-related content under the guise of entertainment or content creation.

Addressing a press briefing, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Grace Ansah Akrofi expressed concern over the growing misuse of digital platforms to spread fear, misinformation, and violent threats.

According to her, the Police Service will not tolerate any conduct on social media that borders on criminality.

If you engage in any act, any behaviour, any conduct, in any shape or form that borders on criminality, the Ghana Police Service will fish you out, will pursue you, will get you arrested and bring you to face the full rigours of the law,” she warned.

DCOP Ansah Akrofi disclosed that police have already arrested at least one individual who appeared in a masked video threatening to kill security personnel.

She explained that the suspect later returned online to apologize, claiming the video was created merely for content purposes.

However, the Police Service insists that such explanations will not excuse actions capable of endangering public safety or causing panic among citizens.

The police spokesperson also referenced another incident that occurred months earlier, where a group of individuals dressed as bandits circulated threatening videos targeting the Ghanaian public. Arrests were subsequently made in that case as well.

According to the Police Service, there has been an increasing trend of online activities that spread misinformation and create unnecessary fear within communities.

As a result, the Service says it has intensified digital surveillance and monitoring of online spaces to ensure safety and maintain public order.

DCOP Ansah Akrofi further urged content creators and social media users to act responsibly and carefully consider the implications of their posts before sharing content online.
