The recent heavy rains and consequent flooding have caused significant disruption across parts of the capital and several communities within the Ketu South Municipality. Among the hardest-hit areas is the Duta Electoral Area within the Aflao Traditional Area, where households, livelihoods, and daily activities have been severely affected.
The floods have not only displaced families but have also disrupted education, commerce, and transportation, leaving many residents in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. In response to the crisis, local leadership and emergency response teams have intensified efforts to provide immediate relief to affected communities.
In the absence of the lead representative due to other equally important official engagements elsewhere, a relief team was promptly mobilized earlier today under the leadership of Mr. Dynamic Akakpo. The team operated in close collaboration with the Ketu South office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to ensure a coordinated and efficient distribution of relief items to affected residents.
The intervention targeted some of the most impacted communities, including Duta, Démadikope, Gakli, and Agbawoeme, where floodwaters have caused significant hardship and displacement.
According to the relief team, the exercise was carefully structured to prioritize vulnerable households, including the elderly, women with children, and families who experienced the most severe impact of the flooding.
As part of the emergency response, essential relief items were distributed to help cushion the immediate effects of the disaster. The supplies provided included:
10 mattresses
100kg of rice
15 cartons of spaghetti
10 cartons of sardines
200 mosquito nets
4 sacks of maize (equivalent to 240 bowls)
100 litres of cooking oil
150 bags of sachet water
These items were intended to address the most pressing needs of affected households, particularly food security, temporary shelter support, and basic health protection against mosquito-borne diseases, which often increase during flooding situations.
While the intervention provided some immediate relief, it was acknowledged that such efforts represent only a temporary measure in addressing the broader challenges posed by recurring floods in the area. The relief team emphasized that the situation requires a more comprehensive and sustainable solution involving both local and national stakeholders.
In a statement accompanying the exercise, it was noted that the initiative was a modest but sincere contribution aimed at alleviating the immediate suffering of affected residents while awaiting further intervention from government agencies and development partners.
The importance of sustained collaboration between disaster management authorities, traditional leaders, and government institutions was also highlighted as essential in developing long-term mitigation strategies.
The recurring nature of flooding in Ketu South continues to expose communities such as Duta and its surrounding areas to periodic devastation.
