The Acting Rent Commissioner, Mr.Frederick Opoku, has paid a courtesy call on the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto, to explore venues for collaboration on rent regulation and the protection of students living in private accommodation around the university.
The meeting focused on strengthening compliance with Ghana’s rent and tenancy laws as well as improving the welfare and safety of student tenants in surrounding communities.
Mr. Opoku outlined ongoing efforts by the Rent Control Department to enhance adherence to national rent regulations through intensified public education and effective enforcement mechanisms.
He explained that under Ghana’s Rent Act, 1963 (Act 220), landlords are generally prohibited from demanding rent advances exceeding six months for residential properties and one year for commercial premises. He further noted that the law protects tenants from unlawful eviction while also requiring both landlords and tenants to comply with the terms of their tenancy agreements.
The Acting Rent Commissioner added that the Department is promoting the use of standardised tenancy agreements to clearly define the rights and responsibilities of both parties, with the aim of reducing disputes and improving transparency in rental transactions.
He also announced plans to introduce Rent Cards as part of efforts to strengthen record-keeping systems and improve compliance monitoring nationwide.
The engagement forms part of broader initiatives to foster collaboration between regulatory institutions and tertiary education authorities in ensuring safer and more regulated student accommodation environments.
