Floods Wreak Havoc in Adutor as Assembly Member Appeals for Urgent Support

Adutor, South Tongu District – The recent heavy rains that have battered several parts of Ghana continue to leave a trail of destruction across communities, with residents of the Adutor Electoral Area in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region among the hardest hit.

Speaking exclusively on the worsening flood situation, the Assembly Member for the Adutor Electoral Area, Hon. Promise Kwaku Agbanyo, described the devastation as overwhelming and beyond the capacity of the affected communities to manage on their own.

According to him, several public institutions, roads, homes and critical facilities have been severely affected by floodwaters, disrupting education, healthcare delivery and transportation within the area.

One of the most affected institutions is Bekpo Sonukpo Basic School, which has been forced to shut down due to severe flooding. The closure has brought teaching and learning activities to a halt, leaving pupils and teachers stranded as authorities monitor the situation.

Hon. Agbanyo further disclosed that the school park of Adutor Roman Catholic Basic School has been completely submerged by floodwaters, while areas behind the Adutor EP Basic School have also been inundated.

The flood situation has also significantly affected healthcare services in the area. The Adutor Health Centre, which serves as the main healthcare facility for residents, has been flooded together with its two staff bungalows.

“The flooding of the health centre and staff residences is disrupting healthcare services for our people at a time when they need medical attention the most,” Hon. Agbanyo lamented.

Residents of Tsawoeme are also facing severe hardship as floodwaters continue to destroy property. Several buildings have reportedly developed cracks or collapsed, forcing families to seek refuge elsewhere. The main access road to the community has also been cut off, making movement difficult and hampering relief efforts.

The Assembly Member noted that the Agordome-Sonukpo Road and its surrounding communities have been overwhelmed by floodwaters, leaving many residents stranded and exposing properties to further destruction.

As concerns continue to mount, Hon. Agbanyo revealed that management of the South Tongu Health Directorate, together with the Municipal Chief Executive for South Tongu, Hon. Victoria Dzeklo, have visited the affected communities to assess the extent of the damage and interact with residents.

The assessment visit, he said, was aimed at gathering first-hand information to support possible intervention measures and relief efforts for the affected victims.

Meanwhile, the Assembly Member has issued a passionate appeal to government agencies, corporate organizations, non-governmental organizations, philanthropists and the general public to come to the aid of flood victims.

“The situation is beyond the reach of the community. We urgently need support to assist affected families who have lost property and have been displaced by the floods,” he appealed.

Hon. Agbanyo also called on residents within and outside the affected communities to show solidarity with flood victims by offering temporary shelter to those displaced.

“If you have a spare room, a veranda or any safe space that can accommodate flood victims, please open your doors to support them during this difficult period,” he urged.

He further encouraged community members to remain vigilant and prioritize safety as the rains continue.

“Let us continue to check on our neighbours, support one another and ensure that our children and the elderly are protected from harm,” he advised.

The flooding in the Adutor Electoral Area adds to the growing list of communities across Ghana that have suffered extensive damage following the recent rains, raising renewed concerns about drainage systems, climate resilience and disaster preparedness in vulnerable communities.
