Keta, Volta Region – June 18, 2026
Stakeholders in the Keta Municipality and surrounding communities have been sensitised on the progress and prospects of the Keta Port Project during a stakeholders’ engagement and working visit held at the forecourt of Lagoon Hotel, Keta, on Thursday, June 18, 2026.
Addressing participants, the Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Major General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, disclosed that the headquarters of the Keta Port is expected to be ready for operation by January 2027 if all planned activities proceed smoothly.

He further announced that the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has granted the final environmental permit, paving the way for the formal commencement of construction works on the project.
According to Major General Tanye-Kulono, a total of 42 companies have expressed interest in constructing the port. He explained that a comprehensive due diligence process would be conducted to shortlist the best four companies, which would then participate in a competitive tendering process to determine the final contractor for the project.
The GPHA Director-General urged residents to take advantage of the economic opportunities the project would create by securing their lands and investing in quality accommodation facilities, noting that many workers and investors are expected to relocate to the area once construction begins.
He explained that the Keta Port is primarily being developed to serve transit trade and will provide an important gateway for landlocked countries such as Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso to transport their goods.
Major General Tanye-Kulono also highlighted some of the potential environmental and social impacts associated with the construction phase, including noise pollution from heavy machinery, increased dust levels, water turbidity and the social effects that may arise from the influx of people into the area. While acknowledging both the positive and negative consequences of such developments, he assured residents that adequate mitigation measures would be implemented.
Importantly, he assured the public that the construction of the port would not result in flooding in the surrounding communities.
The Volta Regional Minister, Mr. James Gunu, expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far and reiterated government’s commitment to ensuring the successful completion of the project.
For his part, the Member of Parliament for Anlo, Mr. Richard Kwame Sefe, encouraged the youth to acquire relevant technical and vocational skills that would position them to take advantage of employment opportunities at both the construction and operational stages of the port.
Earlier in the day, the delegation paid a courtesy call on the Awormefia of Anlo, Togbi Sri III, during which they presented the EPA permit certificate and officially informed him of the working visit and stakeholder engagement.

The programme concluded with an interactive session during which members of the public raised various questions and concerns about the project. Officials from the relevant agencies provided detailed responses and assurances regarding the implementation of the project.
The Keta Port Project is expected to become a major economic hub in the Volta Region, creating employment opportunities, boosting commerce and enhancing Ghana’s role in regional trade and logistics.
